If You Can't Walk, Try Flying

I was born in February 1972, in Bucharest, Romania. Like any ordinary child, I played and laughed—I just couldn't walk. Both my brother and I were diagnosed with a congenital degenerative neuromuscular disease that could not be treated. We were home-schooled, with support from classmates and teachers who came from time to time to test us. I was in love with Romanian and English language and literature, I listened to lots of music, I read and wrote.

I have always been a self-taught person, thoroughly studying what I enjoyed and wanted to have for keeps!

I later became the Fan Club president of one of Romania's leading singers. My world began to open up and I began to use the talents I thus found out I had.

In 2008 I chose to live in another country, and during the COVID-19 pandemic period, I wrote this book.

"If You Can't Walk, Try Flying" is a book about my life in Romania, dedicated to those who wake up in the morning without hope, without the willpower to try harder and enjoy what life has to offer!

Learn to grow wings—each of us is born to fly!

End Times

Brother and sister soulmates Jon Karl and Summer Odom, orphaned at an early age and thrust into the human comedy of a small southern town, must survive a variety of predators, especially a sociopathic barber who abducts Jon Karl, forcing Summer to access a surprising inner strength that changes both their lives.

After the death of their mother, Maryrell, Jon Karl and Summer Odom are raised in the town of Douvale by their grandmother, Mildra, whose boss, Spruill Dawes, steps into the role of surrogate father. Jon Karl befriends his son Millard. Jon Karl, sexually precocious, finds himself increasingly humiliated by the ravenousness of Douvale women and yearns for a hermit life while mythologizing the few women he likes to think actually loved him. Summer attracts oddball boys which sends her through a series of ill-suited males and strange jobs.

Complications arise when Balch, a local barber, becomes obsessed with Jon Karl, and even more arise when Jon Karl catches the eye of Vance, a young strip club owner and porn filmmaker. Then, when Jon Karl gets into an ill-advised cannabis-growing scheme, he leaves himself vulnerable to blackmail by Vance. Things get worse when Jon Karl is sentenced to the for-profit Baptist correction center run by Spruill’s hated rival, PruetEchols, and he finds Balch working there. One day, Summer’s intuition of something wrong sends her, Spruill, and the sheriff into a ghastly scene and a dangerous rescue of Jon Karl. Jon Karl is released to pursue at last the life he longs for, but becomes increasingly seduced by the strange energy of an abandoned roadside house and the oddly familiar portal it seems to offer. Summer has uneasy premonitions about the house, and with the legacy of a young son from one of her earlier boyfriends, and at last a promising relationship with the latest, survives.

Be Simply Fit

I discovered a long time ago that I was never going to be Arnold Schwarzenegger, or as I had hoped a professional baseball player so I decided to just enjoy working out. This included running, weightlifting, and some skill activities like pick-up softball games or basketball games. In my 30’s and 40’s these worked fine but I found that I had to do more and more to stay in shape and to stay well simply fit. I am currently 69 years old, have had quadruple by-pass which I trained for and have come to terms with the fact that more isn’t necessarily better and as we grow older and we have to get the most bang for our buck when it comes down to exercise. Exercising for 10 minutes every day for a year can put you on the path to good health and it helps to prime the pump so that it becomes easier, which creates the desire to want to do more. But fitness doesn’t only include the physical dimension. Fitness includes the mental, the emotional and the spiritual dimension as well. Reading for 10 minutes every day can be a welcome break from technology and can help us expand our vocabulary and knowledge base. Even those who fear going out of their house can benefit from just a 10 minute walk and a friendly greeting to one of their neighbors. This can also help them to strengthen their emotions and begin to see some of the good in the world. Ten minutes of prayer and meditation can help strengthen our faith and create in us a sense of wellbeing and peace.

All of these things sound great don’t they? Well they are if we just do them consistently. I am sixty nine years old as I stated above and have played the start and stop game my whole life. I have discovered that patience is the key to any form of change that a person wants to make. I have to be patient with myself and others, that’s what makes the difference. Change will come as long as I don’t give up. The change will be incremental but it will come as long as I stay the course and remain consistent, that’s when I will realize that I am Simply Fit. My goal is to help you do the same. This book offers some quick ideas to help you become healthier and improve your longevity. But more importantly I want to help you live a fuller and more vibrant life.

Going To Williamsport

What would you do if you were the 12 year-old new ace pitcher of a very small town baseball team, you and your teammates go on in one magical year to represent your roots at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and you were much too embarrassed beyond mere words to see your own mother cheer you on as you take the big stage hundreds of miles away?

This is Sooner's situation, and his story for the ages is Going to Williamsport, as he faces a mother suffering through acute paranoid psychosis, or just simply really crazy things, in the early years of deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill during the Eisenhower administration.  As the awkward moments pile up, the dirty looks and misunderstandings multiply in town, and the psychotropic drugs and Demedication sessions gather endlessly without the option to "just put her away" anymore, the only child Sooner only sees his own embarrassment and severe contempt for a Semper Fi father who will not deny his marriage vows, nor his unbelievable love for his own son.

Going to Williamsport matters more than anything to Sooner, but definitely not at the expense of seeing "her" in those stands.  In his own very young words, he takes as much as he possibly can, and then makes incredibly clear in the clearest of places that he alone, with his team is Going to Williamsport, and Dad isn't and certainly Mom isn't, either.

Sooner's story plays out as a kid farther away from the far western Oklahoma Panhandle than he's ever been.  Sooner rather than later, his decision to be separate and apart from Mom and Dad is rewarded in surprising ways, but to everyone's surprise, Sooner understands very quickly how his family coin truly has two sides that look surprisingly alike.  From an early exit at the Little League World Series, Dad, Sooner, and special friends realize that in the thankless world of serious mental illness and the family, both the sick and their caretakers need love, support, and most of all, unrelenting allies.

Sooner's experience echoes that of author Rich Agnello, who saw his own mother suffer this way for thirty-seven years, and yet through the constant presence of family and faith, saw his two sisters and him earn two graduate and three undergraduate degrees, as well as the author's fifteen years as a select youth soccer coach.  Through endless painful and proud moments, Going to Williamsport makes incredibly clear to a third generation of deinstitutionalization that both the mentally ill and their immediate support system are both dealing with the Loneliest Illness in the World and are both deserving of our unconditional love and friendship.

Rich Agnello is a native of Webster, New York outside Rochester, who earned his undergraduate degree in speech communication from Marquette University’s Diederich College of Communication, and his master’s degree in public administration from the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business.  Agnello also earned PMP, ITIL, FAC-COR I, FAC-PPM 1, CTAL-TM, CTFL, and Shunra Level 1 professional certifications during his twenty-year career with EDS/HP and the Federal Government.  He resides in Worthington, Ohio north of Columbus with his wife Theresa.

This is his first full-length book, and also his first children's novel.

PRIMER of HEALING

Dear Reader,

This transformational and motivational book is about Life and People; Gratitude, Thoughts, and Meanings; Victories and Knowledge of Self and the World. You need it, even if a diagnosis or symptoms are not knocking at your door. I have a medical diagnosis, and this is part of my story of healing. Every day the Person going through this book will have a clear goal: "To be better than you were yesterday."

A true master is a lifelong learner.

People who understand more about writing than I do have asked me these questions: 1. Who are you writing for? 2. What is it for? With your permission, I'll answer:

1.    I am writing for men and women with the same diagnosis and symptoms as me, and with similar ones. I am writing to give hope and add positivity to the lives of these people and those who will receive this book, because this book will cover different aspects: from diet and weight management, to rest and sleep, we will also talk about alcohol and cigarette use, porn addiction and more.

2.    "For what?" To share information, to contribute to the new World, to ignite hope in those who have lost it, to overcome despair, to discuss and reflect on the meaning and power of thought, the power of actions and words; to earn money from selling books, because it is very sad to live on a pension. You have in your hands the beginning of your new Life! And yes, it is the beginning of the Path to your Wholeness!

May everyone be happy, peaceful and free from suffering.

Bound

BOUND is a Space Opera/First Contact science fiction novel that should appeal to readers of Ann Leckie’s “Ancillary Justice,” Scott Westerfeld’s “Risen Empire,” and Walter Williams’ “Dread Empire’s Fall.”

Shennan and Adin are two minds joined in a single body, one of the rare Bound. Bred and trained as an elite soldier, they protect the Polis’s clandestine First Contact Teams on new worlds. The Bound can be reanimated into a new body after death, and brutal deaths on hostile worlds are a price they willingly pay to protect the Polis.

Shennan is gregarious, charming, and a glib liar while Adin is blunt and in-your-face aggressive. Their duty is to protect the idyllic Polis worlds. In their daily lives they don’t always like each other’s lifestyles, friends, or lovers but during battle they share their body, their sensors and weapons, and fight as a seamless whole.

On Polis worlds, violence is long forgotten; equity and justice are universal. But when peaceful citizens transform into savage killers—the Mad—idyllic Polis worlds descend into chaos. The Mad are spreading. The Mad are winning. And the Mad know how to kill the Bound—permanently.

Shennan and Adin become the key to destroying the source of the Mad. Thrown into a frantic pursuit from star to star, they will be tried not merely in battle but in their hearts. Will friends abandon them in horror at what they must do? Can they defeat the Mad without becoming a monster?

And why did she have a puncture mark on the side of her neck? In order to find out what happened in this accident, he dug out the “Research into the Past” project from his ideas drawer.
