Author Interview

The Interview - Kim Bartosch

Describe the [book/series] in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.

My debut novel, "Ask the Girl," blends the eerie atmosphere of "The Haunting of Hill House" with the emotional depth of "The Lovely Bones." It follows three teenage girls embroiled in solving a chilling murder. The narrative unfolds through the perspectives of Lila, recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder and grappling with past regrets; Rose, striving for a film school scholarship as her ticket to freedom; and Katy, a ghost imprisoned by her own murderer.

Initially inspired by my personal experiences growing up alongside my sister, who has bipolar disorder, the story evolved into a captivating blend of contemporary drama and ghostly mystery. Throughout the novel, poignant themes of sisterhood, grief, coping with bipolar disorder, and forgiveness intertwine, offering readers a compelling and resonant exploration of the human condition.

Would you like readers to have any specific takeaway from your book?

My main message for readers is the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness isn't a sign of weakness; it's a display of strength. It demonstrates your ability to move beyond trauma and let go of anger and thoughts of revenge, which ultimately only harm you. Many religions, including Christianity, emphasize the importance of forgiveness because it liberates you. Remember, forgiveness isn't just for others; it's also crucial to forgive yourself.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I love to read and I'm a part of several book tour companies where I read new releases and do reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, Instagram, and my blog, Kim's Book Reviews and Writing Aha's. I also give away the free books I receive so be sure to join my mailing list on my website, KimBartosch.com so you can join in on the fun! Besides reading, I love traveling, modeling small doll houses, and spending time with my family and friends.

Did you always want to be an author? If not, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Since I was 12 years old, I've harbored a passion for writing, crafting stories in secret and stashing them away in my room. It wasn't until I reached my thirties that I summoned the courage to pursue my dreams of becoming an author. Though my first attempt, a science fiction fantasy novel, didn't quite meet my expectations, it served as a springboard for further writing endeavors. This journey ultimately culminated in the publication of my book, "Ask the Girl."

Where do you like to write? In a coffee shop? In your home office? On the beach?

I love to write at home in my office but sometimes, when I'm feeling a little stir crazy I'll venture out to my local library or a nearby coffee shop. In summer and spring when the weather is warmer, I'll go to the park to get some fresh air!
